So here I am, potentially setting myself up for some trouble. But you know what? I feel like I want to write about it.
The belief that there is NO God. That there are NO gods. That there is absolutely NO higher power whatsoever.
There are a lot of people out there who claim atheism….
Your laundry list of reasons for atheism are pretty offensive, and lead me to believe you’ve never actually asked an atheist why they don’t believe in god. Nobody decides to be an atheist so they can do bad things. In fact, you don’t decide to be an atheist at all. You don’t decide to believe the sky is blue, or the grass is green. They’re conclusions you reach automatically from observation.
You want to know why people are actually atheists? It’s not for selfish reasons or to excuse immorality, and to claim that’s the case shows your disdain for us. It’s not because the claims are confusing and bewildering, because they really really aren’t. It’s not even because of the discrimination atheists have historically faced at the hands of believers. We’re people who simply aren’t convinced by the claims of religion. The lack of evidence is simply too much.
Do you believe in Zeus, Odin, Krishna, or Glooscap? Why not? Is it because you don’t want to follow the rules set down in their religions? Is it because you’re discriminated against by their followers? Is it because you find their claims incompreheisible and confusing? I suspect when you find your reasons for not believing their claims(assuming it isn’t “I’ve already got a set of beliefs, no thank you.”) you’ll understand why I don’t believe the claims of your religion.
